查到一个资料,权当学习:
这大概是女权主义者自造的词,所以正规词典未能予以承认(一家之言?):
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Etymo ... s-1474/damehood.htm
"Damehood" is a "contrived word." It does not appear in dictionaries, because it is not recognized as a legitimate word.
I have checked the following sources: Webster's Third International Unabridged Dictionary, Random House Unabridged Dictionary, The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, AND "the bible" of the world of etymology -- "The Oxford English Dictionary."
The latter -- called the OED -- gives several definitions and origins for the word "dame." Here is one: "A woman in rank next below a lady: the wife of a knight, squire, citizen, yeoman. "
Since the word "knighthood" DOES exist, someone decided to give equal recognition to "damehood."
But, formal English has no official recognition of the word. |
