应该是Use the Right Word 的改进版
This unique blend of thesaurus, dictionary, and manual of English usage defines, compares, and contrasts words of similar but not identical meaning--such as "infer" and "imply". More than 6,000 synonyms are included. "Recommended."-- Booklist.
stream/brook/creek/rill/river
These nouns are comparable in denoting a body of water flowing in a watercourse or channel.
Stream,THE MOST GENERAL,embraces all the others in its meaning.
A rill is a TINY stream, the SMALLEST of those under discussion.
A creek is a stream that is LARGER than a brook and usually FLOWS THROUGH A VALLEY.
A brook is usually a PRIMARY stream EMERGING FROM A SPRING.
A river is a LARGE stream of water that DISCHARGES INTO A LARGER body of water, such as the ocean,a lake,or another river.
这还没完,作者很贴心的又提醒,只有stream/river在文学写作中有比喻的作用,例如“人流/a stream of people”及“血流成河/rivers of blood".
Highly recommended!!! |
