Check
Check:
MWCD:a mark typically √ placed beside an item to show it has been noted, examined, or verified
SOED:A mark made against an item in an account or list indicating that it has been verified or noted; a tick.
OED:A mark made against an item in an account, list, &c., to show that it has been ‘checked’, i.e. compared and found correct.
WBD:a mark (✓) to show that something has been examined or compared;
check mark.
Usually this mark indicates that the thing is true or right.
Sometimes, as on examinations, it indicates something false or wrong.(这个时候,似乎更应该用×号了。)
CD: A mark put against names or items on going over a list, to indicate that they have been verified, compared, or otherwise examined.
Webster 1913: A mark, certificate, or token, by which, errors may be prevented, or a thing or person may be identified; as, checks placed against items in an account; a check given for baggage; a return check on a railroad.
SOED: A small dash or other mark (now usu. ‘✓’) made with a pen or pencil to draw attention to something, to check off an item in a list, to indicate the correctness of a written answer or remark, etc.
AHD: A light mark used to check off or call attention to an item.
