I have had a long life, I have had much time for thought as I lay alone in my stall, and I think I may say that I understand the nature of life on this earth as well as any animal now living.

看了原版英文的，对第一章这句话不是很理解，然后看了几个中文的版本，译者理解也是好几种，混乱了

b as much as:
Thus the Government may understandably regard the US build-up as a source of provocation as well as protection (Manchester Guardian Weekly).

这儿主要是know as well as I do的用法。
奥威尔的这个句子其实和这儿的用法很相近，就是把know变成了understand。
