以下权作本人对type/s (kind/s) of 用法的学习笔记:
1)Webster's Dictionary of English Usage:
These (or those) kind (or sort) of.
We will tell you first what most of the handbooks and usage books say: use this or that with singular kind or sort and follow of with a singular noun;
use these or those with plural kinds or sorts and follow of with a plural noun.
But we will warn you second that this advice applies only to American English, and that it presents an unrealistically narrow set of options. Real usage—even in American English—is much more varied and much more complex.
2)Collins English Usage:
After kinds of you can use either the plural or singular form of a noun. For example, you can say 'I like most kinds of cars' or 'I like most kinds of car'. The singular form is more formal.
这里涉及kind视作名词还是形容词的问题,我看得有点儿晕。
3)葛传槼:(这个有点儿老派)
a kind of rose,the best kind of pen,this kind of bed 等表达方式里的 rose,pen,bed 等词都是单数形式。
用复数形式的也有,但很不普通。
two kinds of rose,these kinds of pen 等表达方式里的 rose,pen 等词改作复数形式也可以。
these kind(不是 kinds)of roses,those kind(不是 kinds)of pens 等表达方式英美人用得很多,但不算正当,最好改作 roses of this kind,pens of that kind 等,或 such roses,such pens 等。
4)Pocket Fowler's Modern English Usage
Kind of/sort of (但是,OED认为kind是形容词,这个有点儿怪)
When followed by a singular noun, the correct form is (e.g.) this kind [or sort] of house, not this kind [or sort] of a house. When it is followed by a plural noun, many purists insist on making kind or sort plural as well, e.g. these kinds [or sorts] of houses. To say this kind [or sort] of houses is ungrammatical, but an alternative style these kind [or sort] of houses has been in use since the 14c. Although this too is ungrammatical on a normal interpretation and was questioned by the OED, its rationale lies in regarding kind of as an adjectival phrase qualifying the following noun (in this case, houses), with the demonstrative pronoun these or those also qualifying houses rather than qualifying kind (or sort). |
