Achilles FANG completed his doctoral dissertation in 1958, the 865-page "Materials for the Study of Pound's Cantos”. Pound's Cantos can be viewed as a panorama of modern civilization since Dante, and Fang’s dissertation is a detailed collection of notes  on sources and allusions in the Cantos, including explication of many of the numerous Chinese texts in the poem.  Just as mentioned in the preface of the book “A Companion to the Cantos of Ezra Pound, by Carroll F. Terrell”, “the unpublished doctoral dissertation of Achilles FANG, ‘Materials for the Study of Pound's Cantos’  has been extremely valuable in locating numerous sources”.

In what follows, we will describe concisely the contents of PDF files contained in a single folder, which can be downloaded from the BaiDu’s cloud storage.

I, Achilles FANG: In Memoriam, from Monumenta Serica, Vol. 45 (1997), pp. 399-413 , containing three articles as follows:

1, Achilles Fang: In Memoriam, by J.R.Hightower;
2, BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ACHILLES FANG, by Ilse M . Fang;
3, The Last refuge of beauty, which is a review of the book: The Foundation of Aesthetics, by C.K.Ogden. This review is highly recommended, and it is in fact very readable.

II, Ilse Martin FANG(1914-2008) In Memoriam, by Hartmut Walravens. This is an obituary written in German, which was posted in Monumenta Serica 58 (2010): 395-398, which is an East Asian studies journal. Achilles had known Ilse Martin in Peking, in 1948, and then he married Ilse Martin. Ilse is a German Sinologist, and she had once been an editor of Monumenta Serica together with Achilles FANG.

III, FANG and E Pound Correspondence, which contains 96 correspondences between FANG and Pound.  Most of the correspondence principally concerns Fang's efforts to assist Pound in the transliteration of Chinese characters and in the publication of his Confucian translations.

When FANG wrote his doctoral dissertation he became friendly with Pound in the process. He became Pound's primary correspondent and source on Chinese topics, assisting Pound with his translation work on The Classic Anthology as Defined by Confucious. Those correspondences document the professional and personal relationship between Achilles Fang and Ezra Pound.

IV, 2 letters from Ch'ien Chung-shu to FANG, which also contain two photocopies of the original letters.

V, A Companion to the Cantos of Ezra Pound, by Carroll F. Terrell.  This is a reference to help you understand Ezra Pound's “The Cantos”. This book is an essential companion for the common readers of  “The Cantos”, and it contains very detailed explanations of abundant obscure passages in Classical Greek,  Latin, Italian, and so forth.
