The American Heritage Dictionary of Indo-European Roots, 2nd Ed., by Calvert Watkins

Did you know the words “red” and “worm” share the same root? Yes , they share the same root since the worms were used to make red dye. In fact, it is a must have for anyone interested in etymological research of English words, and it will be a great companion to your other main dictionaries.

This fascinating dictionary, The American Heritage Dictionary of Indo-European Roots, 2nd Ed., by Calvert Watkins, remains an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of English and its place in the Indo-European language family. More than 13,000 words are traced to their origins in Proto-Indo-European, the prehistoric ancestor of English that was spoken before the advent of writing. In Calvert Watkins’s skilled hands, Proto-Indo-European language and society are rendered as alive and compelling as they must have been six thousand years ago. His introductory essay shows how words in an unrecorded ancient language can be reconstructed and offers a wealth of fascinating information about Proto-Indo-European culture.  On the preceding part of the dictionary, it contains about thirty pages of introduction that go over the basics of what it means to be an Indo-European language, how proto-Indo-European roots are discovered, what the branches of Indo-European are, and what we know about the culture of the proto-Indo-Europeans. This introduction will be interesting for anyone who want to know the scope of research on Indo-European linguistics.

The dictionary that follows contains nearly 1,350 reconstructed roots, plus two dozen new “Language and Culture” notes that explore interesting sidelights to the etymologies presented in many entries. The dictionary portion consists of a series of entries in alphabetical order of proto-Indo-European roots; and then a cross-reference of English words and the root to look up for more information. This dictionary lists descendant words only in English but its index allows you to backtrack from an English word to a Proto-Indo-European root.

Book Structure: One hundred and three pages of roots(1-103) are preceded by an excellent introduction on “Indo-European and the Indo-Europeans”(vii-xxv); they are followed by a thorough index (105-145), a table of sound correspondences( 146-147), and a diagram of “The Indo-European family of languages”( 148-149).

Compared to the 2nd edition of this dictionary, the author added some important  features to the 3rd edition, published in Sept. 2011: language and culture notes interspersed among the main entries, new pictures in the chapter “Indo-European and the Indo-Europeans”, more than 200 entries added and even some new recently identified Indo-European roots included.

The author, Calvert Watkins, was an American linguist and philologist,  especially a pre-eminent expert in Indo-European linguistics.  Watkins’Law is named after Calvert Watkins, which is an hypothesis on the analogical reorganization of inflectional paradigms on the model of the third-person singular, first stated by Calvert Watkins in his Indo-European Origins of the Celtic Verb (1962). He died in 2013, so we never look forward to the 4th edition of this dictionary.

Although the author claimed that his book is accessible to anyone who is not formally trained in linguistics (and does not know all the fancy jargon) but is literate in English, you’d better have some minimal prerequisites of the history of English language.

这本书挺不错的，学术水准是比较高的，作者 C. Watkins ，是印欧语言学界重量级的学者，特别是对古爱尔兰语和印欧神话学研究有很深的造诣。

很感谢楼主分享，书是研究英语的非常好的资料。

我手上有第三版的实体书，但查阅起来毕竟没有电子版方便，而电子版貌似只有楼主发的第二版，于是在这里简单列举一下我发现的第三版比第二版多出来的内容，没有刻意对比，只是在查找具体单词时发现的：
