1, Bernstein’s Reverse Dictionary, 2nd Edition, by Theodore M. Bernstein, revised and expanded by David Grambs.

The first edition was published by Quadrangle/the New York Times Book Company in 1975.

Bernstein is the former consulting editor of The New York Times, and David Grambs is a common editor. A conventional dictionary lists words alphabetically and gives their meanings. This unconventional dictionary alphabetizes 20000 definitions to lead to the precise word you seek. That is why it is called a Reverse Dictionary.  How to use this unusual dictionary? You should consult the detailed introduction by Bernstein, which comes with nice instructions for the use of dictionary. Parenthetically, this dictionary is basically a compilation of SAT words. If you want to expand your vocabulary drastically you could try to read this dictionary page by page. Anyway, Bernstein’s Reverse Dictionary is both interesting and useful.

2, The Oxford Reverse Dictionary, compiled by David Edmonds, Oxford University Press, First Published,1999.

The author, Barbara Ann Kipfer, is a research and dictionary specialist with Ask Jeeves, the internet question-answering service. Barbara holds two PhDs in linguistics and in archaeology respectively. She is the author of 21 books, including some famous books, such as Roget’s 21st century thesaurus, The order of things(Random House), Dictionary of American slang, The encyclopedic dictionary of archaeology. She is also the editor of Roget’s International Thesaurus, Sixth Edition(Harper Resource).

This flip dictionary can be viewed as a perfect blend of a thesaurus and a dictionary and a reference guide. It could be very useful tool and resource for writers, especially helpful when you don't have the right word, but know its context or category, etc. Whenever you are stuck for a word or phrase, the flip dictionary comes through with so many options. It is particularly great when you need the perfect word to precisely convey what you mean but it’s on the tip of tongue, for instance, how to describe the intense fear of the number 13?  Look up "phobias" and you will find "triskaidekaphobia”. Someone who suffers from this condition is "triskaidekaphobic". Yes, you figured them out! I have this freaking cool dictionary on my shelf, although I have held its PDF in my computer.

I recommend this flip dictionary to anyone who does any kind of writing or speaking and has trouble with thinking of the right word!
