虽然楼主点评“不知所云”出言不逊、令人不快,但是本着学术探讨的宗旨,愿意再略作解释。
定语性形容词和表语性形容词,英文分别是attributive adjective和predicative adjective。表示身体状态的词,如crouch、squat、stoop、sprawl等,在英式英文中一般仅用现在分词形式做形容词。
在美式英文中,可见用过去分词作形容词的用法,且多为表语性用法。
There were three of the birds squatted obscenely. (Hemingway)
The man ... was tall, slightly stooped and in his forties. (Coronet)
He sat sprawled against the bar. (Saxton)
A crouched tiger is ready to spring on any prey that is weak and wounded. (The Philadelphia Inquirer)
