T.S. Eliot, in his masterwork The Waste Land, described man as knowing only “a heap of broken images.” In a poem that freely quotes from works as diverse as Shakespeare, the Bible, popular songs, and Indian holy texts, this line has been interpreted as referring to the work itself. Critics have suggested that the poem itself is “a heap of broken images”—lines from other works are strewn and scattered without citation. And in using quotations but stripping them of their meaning, Eliot seems to have suggested a problem in the modern world. Quotations have lost their significance, and, with them, so have literary works.

In pointing this out, Eliot tapped into something that artists had also been alluding to in their works. Words and images had lost their meaning in the modern world. We were now entering a period in which everything that could be said had already been said and no longer mattered. Literature and art would merely be things to be chopped up and digested but not appreciated or understood. Instead, they would just be broken images that depict something other than reality.

1. 可能是为了进一步说明它们的关联性，但也有可能笔者任性，就喜欢添这么一句..

Google搜一下"and with them"，发现大家用的还挺溜的。理解成一种惯用表达就好了，其实就相当于as well (as).

2. suggest sth有state sth indirectly之义，即暗示。文中Eliot似乎暗示了现代世界里的一个问题。

3. into可加可不加，tap (into) sth = make use of sth，利用。
