Your familiar Chinglish phrase "jiayou" meaning "root for" has been officially introduced into the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), a twenty-volume juggernaut that seamlessly records the trajectory of the English language. OED has been regarded as a symbol of human civilization that man could send to extraterrestrial beings as a gift.
The second edition of OED has had many entries of Chinese stock now, including "jiaozi", "hongbao", "guanxi", "wuxia", "hukou", "goji Berry", "fengshui", "kowtow", "hutong", "long time no see", "lose face", etc..
Some grammarians are expecting even more as Mandarin becomes more and more popular among people from other countries. One day, "tuhao" and "dama", which are widely used by Chinese people from all walks of life, might find their way into this OED, the linguistic reification of human civilization. |
