This book is for anybody who wants to write well. It’s for you if you’re composing an essay or a report, taking the SAT, or applying to a college or graduate school. It’s for anyone who’s answering an ad for a good job or writing a school assignment, a formal presentation, or a publication. Teachers and editors certainly have to know the traditional rules and the tricky word meanings that are covered in this book. And many everyday writers want to know how to select the precise word or phrase that Standard English requires, the right choice between words that look alike, the plural form of a noun, etc., in order to communicate clearly and effectively.

发现这本书里很多有趣的知识啊,比如书里提到这点:
Speakers commonly said an before words beginning with h when the first syllable was unstressed. By the late nineteenth century, though, educated people generally pronounced the h in those words, and began to write a before them. But the truth is that even today many people, including some very famous historians, still say an historian and an historic(al). Some people also say an before habitual, hereditary, heroic, hotel, hysterical, and a few other words beginning with h-.
19世纪以前,h字母开头的单词如果首音节是弱读的,则冠词用 an 不用 a… 哪怕发音不是元音… 查了下Garner's Moder English Usage,里面也提到这点了,看起来现在用a 的还是占多数(虽然an也不能算错)。不过发音是元音的现在还是用an,比如an hour
