现代汉语词典：

哑：

①由于生理缺陷或疾病而不能说话：
聋～◇～剧|～口无言。
②嗓子干涩发不出声音或发音低而不清楚：
沙～|～嗓子|嗓子都喊～了。

汉语里面的「哑」字要么没声，要么声音低。

由此可见，raucous的基本意思是「大声+刺耳」，因为大声，刺耳，所以可以表达「吵闹」。

牛津高階英漢雙解詞典第8版：

sounding loud and rough 刺耳的；尖厲的
◆ raucous laughter 刺耳的笑聲
◆ （略）
◆ a group of raucous young men 一群吵鬧的年輕人

单看这里，「刺耳」「尖厉」「吵闹」都没有问题

牛津词典告诉我们，raucous的语源来自拉丁语，有一个同源词hoarse：

牛津高階英漢雙解詞典第8版：

hoarse / hɔːs ; NAmE hɔːrs / ADJECTIVE
(of a person or voice 人或嗓音 )

可见，raucous和hoarse虽然同源，使用上有一定区别：raucous 凸显大声，可以表达吵闹，hoarse不凸显大声，不表达吵闹，而强调声音粗的一面

有的英汉词典，很注重不把「哑」「低声」这样的暗示带到raucous里面来：

剑桥英汉：

蓝登书屋韦氏在翻译的时候似乎格外注意这个问题，所以语源那里的hoarse写「沙哑」，但是raucous是「粗厉」。同时补上「喧闹杂乱」，因为这个是raucous独有的。

英华大词典（修订第三版）：

raucous
音标：[ 'rɔ:kəs ]
adj.
沙声的；粗声的；吵闹的。

不过有的英汉词典，在这个词上面的处理值得商榷：

「沙嘎」这个词，各大汉语词典不收，「粗嘎」，只有汉语大词典补编和中华汉英收。中华汉英还说是方言词，用方言词解释英语，读者不容易找到解释，不大好吧？

「嘶哑」这个对应词，不大合适。各大词典解释「嘶哑」都是「沙哑」，现代汉语词典：

(嗓子)发音困难，声音低沉而不圆润。

前面已经说了，「哑」暗含「没有声音或者声音低」。中国大百科全书：

发声时的音高、音色和音量异常、无力、撕裂、粗呖、单调或刺耳等现象。喉病常见症状。

中国大百科全书表达得全面一点，音高、音色、音量异常都算做特征，这么看来，用「嘶哑」来对应凸显大声的raucous并不合适。

为什么还是有不少英汉词典说「沙哑」「嘶哑」呢？我认为是英汉大词典的示范作用。比如，尽管「沙嘎」「粗嘎」这两个词都不是普通话词语，大多数词典不收，有几本英汉词典还是跟着英汉大说了：

新牛津英汉双解大词典：嘶哑的, 沙嘎的; 粗嘎的

朗文当代高级英语辞典（英英·英汉双解第5版）：沙哑的，粗嘎的

新时代英汉大词典：嘶哑的,粗嘎的，刺耳的

这一方面体现了英汉大词典的权威地位，一方面也反映出，一旦英汉大的翻译有疏失，容易扩散影响别的辞书。

不知道英汉大词典修订组怎么看。

The sounds made by corncrakes, ravens, and bull-frogs are extremely raucous. The voice of a parrot that has not yet learned how to speak in mellow tones is often painfully raucous. A person with a sore throat or inflamed tonsils usually talks raucously.

Hoarse typically indicates something has changed temporarily in the timbre of the voice. This could be caused by an inflammation of the vocal chords (laryngitis) which can be cause by a cold, or over-stressing the voice (yelling), acid-reflux, among other things. Hoarse is the best one to use when describing the condition to a doctor. Another common phrase is "lost my voice", often an extreme example of being hoarse, where almost no sound is produced.

Raspy voices are the opposite of smooth. For instance, an actor has a raspy voice. Raspy marks an unpleasantly harsh, grating voice.

From the above, we may come to a conclusion that, on the one hand, the word "raucous" is more similar to the word "raspy" in the sense of synonym, which mainly describes unpleasant, gravelly, gritty voices; on the other hand, the word "hoarse" has more similar meaning with the Chinese word "哑" when doing English-Chinese translation.

补一句，我认为英汉大词典之所以让raucous和hoarse都说「哑」，是因为这两个词早期确实很近。

OED2，Century，Funk & Wagnalls 都用Hoarse来解释raucous。现在也有的辞书用Hoarse来解释raucous。

我们要看到，raucous这个词，按OED记载，始见于18世纪中叶，OED2 的最新例子却是1852年的，说明长期没有修订。

raucous 的词义发展出loud这一个偏向以后，oxford 全线辞书都添加了loud：

Concise Oxford English Dictionary XI： making or constituting a harsh, loud noise.
Shorter Oxford English Dictionary 6th：Of a sound, esp. a voice: hoarse, rough; loud and harsh.
Pocket Oxford English Dictionary：making or constituting a harsh, loud noise.

Shorter Oxford 都改了，说明什么？说明这两个已经不是完全同义词了。

当然了，这个是我的推测，英汉大词典为什么这么做，还是编者说了算

回应一个问题，有人说，语料库里「沙哑」可以和「大声」搭配，所以「沙哑」不排斥「大声」：

警官用沙哑的声音像发布号令似地大声喊道

我认为这并没有改变「沙哑」默认「低声或者小声」的性质，首先，现代汉语词典在「哑」下举例就是「沙哑」，没有疑问；其次，「沙哑」「低声或者小声」的性质是语素带来的，自然可以被「大声」的词汇意义所覆盖，带上「默认发声困难，但是这个人很努力、很慷慨激昂，突破了发音器官限制」的修辞效果。

「瘸」是「腿脚有毛病、走路不稳」，可是语料库里面一样有：

也不待林市回说，阿罔官回过身，拖拉着一双放过的小脚，几近乎瘸着快步走过院子进屋去。
忽见排头那间耳房里闪过一道亮光，随着又见一条黑影从门里窜了出来，站在门前向四处探望一番，便一瘸一瘸地沿着石阶飞快向侧门走来。
老人见车停下，便一瘸一瘸狂奔过来，呼道：“首长，我有话说呀——”

按常理，瘸着还怎么快？怎么狂奔？我们自然不能说因为有这样的句子，「瘸」能拿来翻译「快」

Waverley Pictorial Dictionary 是很早的词典，把raucous看得跟hoarse很近，很正常，但不代表现在也如此

raspy并不凸显loud，不能说raucous跟raspy更近。

raspy的释义里面，最好不出现「哑」（但是例句翻译可以，因为有的情况下raspy确实「哑」）。这一点英汉大词典做得对。（虽然例句中有方言词「粗嘎」）
