TTS朗读的效果并不好,我劝楼主灭了这心思
我个人建议啊, Collins Cobuild 这种入门辞典应该尽快过了拉倒,别幻想什么【对理解的程度可以大大加深】。
什么叫大大加深啊?主观标准一大堆,我来举一个客观标准,就以英语出国考试为例吧,过去GRE考试有一种类比词汇题,专考你对词汇的理解,我随便来一个:
13. ALCOVE: RECESS::
(A) turret: chimney (B) dome: roof
(C) column: entrance (D) foyer: ballroom
(E) foundation: building
alcove 和 recess 是什么关系?请看入门辞典Cobuild:
alcove / ælkoʊv / (alcoves )

我的妈呀 !!alcove 的解释里面,有一小段跟recess 五个意思里面的第三个意思的解释相近……这……能观察出来的绝对是高手!
再看正版原装Collins:
Collins English Dictionary, 2015
alcove /ˈælkəʊv/
noun
1. a recess or niche in the wall of a room, as for a bed, books, etc
2. any recessed usually vaulted area, as in a garden wall
3. any covered or secluded spot, such as a summerhouse
ORIGINC17: from French alcôve, from Spanish alcoba, from Arabic al-qubbah the vault, arch
Synonyms
= recess, corner, bay, niche, bower, compartment, cubicle, nook, cubbyhole
recess
noun /rɪˈsɛs ; ˈriːsɛs/
a space, such as a niche or alcove, set back or indented
……
ORIGINC16: from Latin recessus a retreat, from recēdere to recede
Synonyms
= break, rest, holiday, closure, interval, vacation, respite, intermission, cessation of business, schoolie
= alcove, corner, bay, depression, hollow, niche, cavity, nook, oriel, indentation 看到了没?在原版Collins 里面,这两个词无论是在释义,还是同义词里面,都反复点出来,生怕你没看见
有人要讲,这样的释义不通俗呀!我就是想看【built further back than the rest of the wall】这样的语言,可是你看,原版Collins 里面也有【set back or indented】这样的语言哦,原版Collins 还把词源【recess来自recede】给你指出来了,好记得不得了。
所以你说说,Collins Cobuild 能让你【深】到哪里去啊
来对比一下【牛津】【朗文】两位同伴:
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 6th edition
alcove /ˈælkəʊv $ -koʊv/ noun [countable]
a place in the wall of a room that is built further back than the rest of the wall SYN recess
朗文释义差不多,不过指出了同义词【recess】哦
牛津高阶英汉双解词典(第四版)
alcove
n small space in a room, etc formed by part of the wall being set back; recess 壁凹(墙壁凹进处); 凹室; 壁龛
很经典的牛津高阶第四版也有
不过貌似牛津高阶的新版本没了,这就是牛津高阶越做越烂的证据嘛,只不过有人真的是非最新版不要的
