海明威的《老人与海》中的一句话 The sun rose thinly from the sea and the old man cuould see the other boats , low on the water and well in toward the shore , spread out across the current. 其中 well in toward the shore不好理解，特别是well 后面的in ，不知怎么理解。

这个是否比较有说服力？

Webster's New World College Dictionary 直接把 inshore 解释为 in toward the shore.

正如@klwo2 所提，海明威在后面一节（"they showed very low and far inshore."）甚至直接使用了 inshore。

我估计海明威在这两处表达的意思是相同的，只不过换了种说法而已。首先那些船本身是朝向海岸，然后从老人的角度看，它们是远在海岸那边，所以两处分别用了 well 和 far 进一步强调。我不太认同那些船 move away from the shore 这种理解。

观察下面两段（第一段来自题主，第二段来自klwo2提供的相关下文）：
1. The sun rose thinly from the sea and the old man could see the other boats , low on the water and well in toward the shore , spread out across the current.
2. The sun was two hours higher now and it did not hurt his eyes so much to look into the east. There were only three boats in sight now and they showed very low and far inshore.

不难发现，高亮部分极为接近，说的是一回事，无非程度上略有变化，以及表达上略有不同（毕竟英语忌讳重复<一般情况下>）。
要想理解第一段中的高亮部分，看第二段中的高亮部分就可以了，简直就是第一段高亮部分的paraphrase：

low = low
well = far [很，非常：表强调]
in toward the shore = inshore [靠近海岸] （其中的toward表near，接近。非说表朝向也可以，因为就toward的词义发展过程而言，朝向是本意，接近是引申）

整个场景大意为：

老人捕鱼时划出去很远（一贯勤奋），而其他人都在靠近海岸的地方捕鱼。老人回头看向海岸方向时，可以见到若干别人的渔船，漂浮在靠近海岸的地方，船身横切水流（垂直于潮流可以使船更稳定，不容易顺流漂移）。
两个小时之后，渔船减少了——有可能是老人漂得更远了，视野内的船就更少了——毕竟地球是圆的，海平面是有弧度的。原本挺大、相距挺宽的东西，离远了看就会显得更小、相距更近。此时老人离岸更远了，所以会觉得其他人的船更加、非常靠近海岸（far inshore）。
至于船为什么low，也是由于海平面有弧度的原因。近处、平面观察时，如果感觉船身吃水1米，那么从远处观察时，由于弧度的作用，就会感觉船身吃水1.5米，甚至更多——正如海天之间来了一艘船的时候，我们看见桅杆的场景——那时的船是最low的。

理解了上面的场景，余光中等译者的译文就好评价了。你会发现，高人很高，但人毕竟不是神。虽然余光中的汉语水平令人钦佩，对翻译的理解也很深刻（我深深受益于他的《余光中谈翻译》），但毕竟不是native speaker，有时候也保不准会有些不到位的地方。

仅是一点个人看法，抛砖引玉之用。编辑词典我不会，就通过这些来表示对论坛的一点支持吧。

余光中译本：

淡淡的太阳从海上升起，老人看见其他船只低低地挨着水面，朝海岸漂去，向海浪垂直的方向分散开。接着，太阳更明亮了，刺眼的强光照在水面上。

淡淡的太阳从海上升起，老人看见其他的船只，低低地挨着水面，离海岸不远，和海流的方向垂直地展开着。跟着太阳越发明亮了，耀眼的阳光射在水面上，随后太阳从地平线上完全升起，平坦的海面把阳光反射到他眼睛里，使眼睛剧烈地刺痛，因此他不朝太阳看，顾自划着。

《牛津高阶英汉双解词典(第8版)》
well in (with sb)
(informal) to be good friends with sb, especially sb important 是某人（尤指要人）的好友

她似乎和所有大人物都关系很好。

关系好的；亲近的<非正式>

推断为“离海岸不远”

李继宏译本：

太阳黯淡地从海面升起，老人看见其他的渔船，低低地贴着水面，远远地落在他后面离岸不远的地方，三三两两地散布在海流两边。然后太阳变得明亮起来，

这位为了解决这个问题也是煞费苦心。

我来说说我的看法。首先，3楼的理解自然是错的，相信楼主的水平看得出来

其次，这个句子里面，【low on the water and well in toward the shore】可以缩为【low and well】，【well】不跟【in】在一起，请看下面的ppt：

那么剩下的问题是：1）well 是什么意思？2）【in toward the shore】是什么意思？
根据搜索到的资料，海明威特别喜欢两个介词用在一起，《基于语料库的海明威小说评论研究》：

如这本小说是以“模范”角色而不是其它三部小说的“学徒”为主人公，老人说的话与其思想的一致性等,小说中的“太阳”与第一部小说的题目“太阳照常升起”遥相呼应；第二部长篇小说《永别了，武器》中女主人公Catherine所承担的“模范”角色；海明威个人方言中两个介词连用的手法与语法否定式的运用等等。

这文章楼主不用去看，我看过了，没什么亮点，除了指出这个统计事实。

很多英语语法资料也喜欢引用海明威的句子来讲介词，说明：海明威确实很能用介词。

我的看法：

【low on the water and well in toward the shore】 = 【low on the water and well in (the water) toward the shore】词语都是我们熟悉的常用意思。

low on the water 是低低地停在水面上，这一点所有的汉译本都明白；well in the water 呢，就是在水中央停得好好的、停得稳稳的

我们都知道 alive and well，是【活得好好的，还活着呢】，这个【low and well】，就是低低的，好好的。and 前后都是形容词。

那么【toward the shore】又是什么意思呢？这就需要一点文学感觉了，这里说的是，从海岸那里看来，这些船都好好地停在水中央呢，没靠岸，也不上岸。

所以说in 这个介词是表达船的客观位置，toward这个介词是表达一个主观视角，仿佛这些船呆在水里好好的、稳稳的，跟岸边那个方向的事情产生不了什么瓜葛。

这么看来，余光中的翻译是对的，从岸上能多多少少看见船，但是船离岸很远：

旭日从海底淡淡地升起，老人看到了别的渔船紧贴着水面，远离海岸，而且散布在湾流四处。

余光中版还有一点把握得很对，他把【低】【稳】化用成了【紧贴】，紧贴可不就是稳稳地贴着，跟水面很近，因而【低】么？别的译本里面，都没有【well】。【挨着】不准，因为汉语里头挨着人往往只是轻靠着，并不是皮肉紧贴上。

别的译本里面的【飘去】【离海岸不远】是照着【toward】脑补出来的。李继宏译本里面的【远远地落在他后面离岸不远的地方】，我看应该也是无奈的脑补，把前人【不远】【远】两个说法愣是融合在一起了！

water作水域解释。清楚看见位于朝着海岸线的水域的船只。至于是否靠近海岸，看自己理解了。

low on the water and well in (the water) toward the shore这个思路不错但toward在很多词典里都有near的意思 low on the water and well in (the water)near the shore.是不是一个好的解决方案呢因为在这里the boats 应该相对而言是离开the shore ,toward如果翻译为 "朝向"好像有点不合。

近还是远，不正是很多译者纠结的问题嘛？我的意见是：站在海岸那里仍然能看见，但是很远。（如果站在海岸那里看不见，就没法用介词表达位置关系，所以介词本身说明是可及的）

towards 表达位置关系的时候有两个意思，要么「接近/near」，要么「面向/facing」。如果是时间关系，只能是「接近/near」，因为不存在某个时间跟某个时间相对一说。

我的看法是，「接近/near」位置关系，往往暗含动态或者特殊的小方位，如果是静态的，应该理解成「面向/facing」。下面看例句

柯林斯：

The home of the Morgan family was up Gloucester Road, towards the top of the hill.
摩根家族的住宅在格洛斯特路接近山顶的地方。
The most popular items are located toward the back of the store.
最受欢迎的产品放在靠近商店最里面的地方。

山顶是特殊的小方位，locate是动词，是动态的，是「接近/near」

AHD：

had his back toward me.

背部对着我，这里没有动态，是「面向/facing」

World Book：

to lie with one’s face toward the wall.

脸对着墙，这里没有动态，是「面向/facing」。

朗文：

near a particular place
Uncle Dick and Aunt Mavis live at High Burnton out towards the coast.
迪克叔叔和梅维丝婶婶住在海本顿靠近海边的地方。

动词live，是「接近/near」

W3的例句值得好好看看：

a. : at a point in the direction of : near
  < took a cottage somewhere up toward the Cape >
  < out toward the blue-black ocean — William Beebe >
b. : in such a position as to face : presented to : facing
  < pass the knife with the handle toward the diner >
  < his back was toward me >
  < lower left with face toward camera — New York Times >

< took a cottage somewhere up toward the Cape >这句没有问题，take是动词，是「接近/near」；< out toward the blue-black ocean — William Beebe >有点问题，看原文：

And then I look ahead, out toward the blue-black ocean, and up again to the passing gulls, and the old, yet ever new thrill of travel, of exploration, possesses me.

原来有个动词look！所以也是「接近/near」

下面4句话，刀柄、背部、脸、北面都是静态的，所以是「面向/facing」

下面看英汉大词典，问题最多：

接近,将近;大约：
The beach was golden towards sundown.太阳快落山时海滩一片金黄色。
a cottage somewhere up towards the lake离湖不远的一座农舍
a tendency towards inflation通货膨胀的倾向
There are towards six hundred persons.大约有600人。

先看第二句，第二句明显是W3的例句改的，可是省了动词，这……

第一句是「时间」，只能是「接近/near」，三、四句不表达位置。

很奇怪，一般英英词典在这个词条都强调区分位置、时间，英汉大词典偏不分，一个「接近」就打发了……

回到楼主的句子，船是静态的，应该理解成「面向/facing」。

话说我没看过老人与海，中文英文都没看过，不过楼主这段话后面还有一节：

The sun was two hours higher now and it did not hurt his eyes so much to look into the east. There were only three boats in sight now and they showed very low and far inshore.

两个小时过去了，太阳升得更高了，朝东望去，眼睛没有刺痛得那么厉害。现在只能看见三艘船，它们显得很低，靠近海岸。

海明威把这话又写了一遍！！！！呵呵呵！！！

人家写了far，总不能说是「靠近」了吧？

唯一能产生误会的是：inshore

AHD：

2. Toward or coming toward a shore

所以还是：站在海岸那里仍然能看见（还在近海），但是很远。

余光中版：

太阳已经升上来两小时，向东方眺望，也不那么刺眼了。此刻但见三点小船，紧贴水面，而且远在靠岸的那边。

李继宏译本：

他们显得非常低，远远地在靠近海岸的后方

李继宏愣是把「远」和「靠近」揉在了一起，不容易啊

far inshore是相对the old man 而言意思是离the oid man 已经很远了还在靠近the shore 的地方言下之意是 the old man 已经离 the shore 很远了。也就是说 the three boats 从the old man 观测点来看，是远远地在靠近海岸的地方

（英国英语也作towards）

（1）这个介词主要是表示动态（“朝向…移动”），但是有时候也有静态的意义（“在靠近…之处”）。动态意义可以是物质的。【例如】They were heading toward the border. 他们向着边境前进。也可以是抽象的。【例如】lean toward the opposite opinion向相反的主张倾斜 / work toward a peaceful world朝着和平的世界而努力 / There have been moves toward a settlement. 有了一些和解的动向。静态意义则主要是物质的。【例如】The farm is toward the mountain. 农庄靠山。

但是也有一些动态当中的静态意义，就是从说话者的角度是动态（说了一处之后移动到另一处），而从被描绘的事物或景象的角度来说却是静态。【例如】further south, toward the Mexican border再往南去，在靠近墨西哥边境的地方 / Towards the top, the grass grows poorly. 到了靠近山顶的地方，草就长得很差。

另外，toward还有一种想象中的动态（其实并不动）的意义（“朝向”）。【例如】She sat with her back toward the fire. 她背对着火炉坐着。/ My room faces toward the south. 我的房间朝南。

人多力量大。非常感谢各位的不吝赐教。现在我来做一个总结吧。都是大家的智慧，我只是把他们的观点做了一个梳理而已。
The sun rose thinly from the sea and the old man cuould see the other boats , low on the water and well in toward the shore , spread out across the current.
在这里 well 表强调。in toward the shore 表moving toward the shore away from the water。而这里的the boats 要么是相对静止的在海面上或者move away from the shore .怎么会moving toward the shore away from the water呢？这就涉及到一个物理里面的参照物问题。因为the old man 是move away from the shore 而the boats 要是相对静止的在海面上或者移动的速度不大。若以the old man 作为参照物，the boats 就是moving toward the shore away from the water，就好像我坐在车上向前行，感觉车窗外的树在向后走一样。
至于后面they showed very low and far inshore.这句虽然表现差不多的意思，但有程度上的不同。low 发展到 very low。toward 发展到 inshore .toward 能明显的感觉到the boat 与the shore 的距离, 而inshore 这使人感觉到 the boats 是 in the land near the shore .
in toward the shore 虽然表moving toward the shore away from the water。但如果直接翻译为：向海岸靠近。这会引起误解，因为是早晨，渔船刚刚才出发，不可能回去。
这里的the boats 要么是相对静止的在海面上捕鱼或者move away from the shore 继续向深海进发。所以，well in toward the shore翻译为：离海岸很近,这样可能更合适一些。虽然这样的翻译，使我们不能很好地领略到原著的巧妙。
当然，low on the water and well in (the water)near the shore.这种理解也是一个不错的选项。

首先，towards 在这里不会是「接近」，原因前面已经说了

其次，far 也不会修饰inshore，表达「很……」请看新牛津：

1 often with adverbial at, to, or by a great distance (used to indicate the extent to which one things is distant from another) 远:
it was not too far away
离这里不太远
the mountains far in the distance glowed in the sun.
远处的高山在阳光下熠熠生辉。

far 后面带副词性结构，特别是表方位的副词，是常用意义，远。inshore 是in shore 而来的，当然是「远」

3. by a great deal 大大地, …得多; 很, 极:
he is able to function far better than usual
他能发挥比平常好得多的作用
the reality has fallen far short of early expectations.
现实与早先的预期相去甚远。

far 表示「很」的时候后面不带这类词语。

a. : to a great extent : much — often used with comparatives and superlatives

W3 更是指出表示「很」的时候后面带比较级最高级

我们找找网上「far inshore」的说法，都是「近海」+ 「远」：

我们要保证不要在近海里面跑得太远……

总不能说海明威故意跟词典上面的典型用法、大家伙的典型用法不一致吧？我都没有故意找捕鱼例句，搜出来的基本都是捕鱼相关的
