Marriage and Divorce
Marriage among the Khasis has both religious and social aspects. Marriageceremonies differ from one place to another. One of the most remarkable featuresof the Khasi marriage is that it is customary for the husband to go and live withhis wife in his mother-in-law's place, and not to take his bride home as in the caseof other communities. According to Gurdon there are three types of marriageceremonies prevalent amongst the Khasis. These are 1) Ka Pynhiar synjat, 2) KaLam doh and 3) Kala dih kyiad or la suit (Gurdon 1907:127). Marriage usuallytakes place at the bride's house. Marriages amongst the Jaintias usually take placeafter dusk.Divorce among the Khasis is common and is mostly by mutual consent. When thecouple wishes for divorce, a simple ritual is performed in the presence of awitness. After the ritual is done, the village crier will make a publicannouncement. Remarriage after the divorce is prevalent among both men andwomen.
