我本来只是要找一下wry,结果又发现一个新版、旧版打架的词,大家请看:
牛津高阶双解(第四版):
rueful
adj
showing or feeling good-humoured regret 表示或感到后悔的(但很看得开):
a rueful smile抱憾的微笑。
牛津高阶双解(第9版):
feeling or showing that you are sad or sorry 悲伤的;懊悔的;沮丧的
a rueful smile
惨然一笑
你还别说,强调rueful 这个词不止是「苦」,也有点「小乐」的辞书不止一本:
新牛津双解:
expressing sorrow or regret in a slightly humorous way
悲哀的; 后悔的, 悔恨的:
Oxford Dictionary of English:
Expressing sorrow or regret, especially in a wry or humorous way
奇了怪了,原文里面明明有humorous ,新牛津双解的译者为什么偏偏看不到呢!!!!!
Webster's Third New International Dictionary:
quizzically mournful
< looked up … with a rueful grin — Elmer Davis >
Vocabulary.com Dictionary:
rueful
(once / 1433 pages)
adj
If your elaborate magic trick goes awry, and instead of pulling a rabbit out of an audience member's shoe, you set the shoe on fire, you might give a rueful smile. Rueful means apologetic or remorseful.
The adjective rueful sincerely expresses regret, but it manages to do it with a hint of humor. Rueful shows up a lot in descriptions of remorseful grins or apologetic smiles. If you're sorry about something you've done but you can still laugh at yourself a little bit, you feel rueful. The word itself comes from the verb to rue, which means "to regret."
Vocabulary.com 清楚地讲了为什么这个词是「苦」中带点「乐」,真是宝贵呀!
Collins COBUILD:
If someone is rueful, they feel or express regret or sorrow in a quiet and gentle way.
哇!我以后不小瞧Collins COBUILD了,有时候还是有亮点的嘛!只不过汉译没有翻出来,而是生搬硬套说「后悔的;懊悔的;遗憾的」
Concise Oxford Dictionary 9th:
expressing sorrow or regret in a genuine or humorous way.
Webster's New World College Dictionary:
b) feeling or showing regret, esp. in an abashed way
韦氏新世界这个解释有点意思,说得应该是Vocabulary.com里头讲的情况:带点不好意思的懊悔
BBC English Dictionary:
If someone is rueful, they feel or express regret or sorrow in a quiet and gentle way; a literary word.
The Penguin English Dictionary 3rd, 2007:
1 expressing sorrow or regret, often mixed with self-deprecating humour.
带点自嘲
当然了,不强调「小乐」的词典也有不少,只举一个AHD作例子:
Causing, feeling, or expressing sorrow or regret
