Except for 是可以用在句首的。所以如果此处要用except，还要加个for。
单独的except不能用在句首。

一个句子中只有出现了像“all、any、every、nobody、nothing”这类词语的时候，才能在“expect”后跟名词和名词短语。这类句子还有一个例外，就是“except for”可以放在句首，而“except”则不能。来听几个例句。
Examples
I hate all types of desserts except apple crumble.
I hate all types of desserts except for apple crumble.
我讨厌所有甜食，烤苹果酥除外。
Nobody I know loves fishing except him.
Nobody I know loves fishing except for him.
我认识的人里面除了他以外没有一个爱钓鱼的。
Except for the service, I enjoy everything about this restaurant.
除了服务以外，我觉得这家餐厅还不错。

单词“except”还有一个特殊的用法：当句子中使用的谓语是单词“do”的任何形式时，那么“except”的后面接动词原形，所表示的意思和“but”相同。比如，在下面的这个例句中：
Example
The boy didn't do anything except cry last night.
这个男孩昨晚除了哭以外什么也没做。

昨天晚上看猎魔人，第四集里的人物对话，是直接用的except在句首，可能口语都比较随意吧。我上面的两个回复都是字典里专门强调的定义，语法当中except单独在句首考中中可能是要判定错误的，但口语也无所谓了吧
