最近发现不少新牛津释义问题, 有些内容真还不如oald

譬如: prophesy
ode:
say that (a specified thing) will happen in the future

oald:
to say what will happen in the future (done in the past using religious or magic powers)

没有权威的词典。OALD和朗文把条形图和直方图混为一谈：

OALD
a diagram which uses rectangles(= bars) of different heights (and sometimes different widths) to show different amounts, so that they can be compared

不能通过几个词条就肯定或者否定一个词典，才是理智做法

你举的例子真不见得是新牛津错了。。prophesy确实最开始有宗教含义，但已经推广到比较普通的预见、预计的含义。oald列了本义，新牛津用的是现在更常用的含义（而且事实上也包含本义）。btw，这两个意思都可以至少追溯到14世纪。
oed.com中prophesy释义：
1. intransitive.
a. to speak or writh by, or as by, divine inspiration, or in the name of God or a god; to speak or act as as prophet. 【注：带有宗教意味】
b. to foretell or predict future events; to make a prediction or prophecy (of) 【普通的预见、预计含义】
2. transitive【和不及物用法的含义基本一样，不列了】
3. 【一个现在少用的宗教含义，解释圣经blabla】

1.b 有关键词 foretell or predict

明天下午一点我们办公室开会
not "prophesy" but "say that (a specified thing) will happen in the future"

没有任何上下文情况下, 单独一个"say that (a specified thing) will happen in the future" 来释义 prophesy 太不到位了

不會呀，光 ECMO 就大部分的詞典沒收錄，
COVID-19 跟 Sars-CoV-2 目前只有 WordWeb 跟 Britannica 有，
可是你絕不會說WordWeb比大多數詞典好

没贬低ode的意思，就是觉得有些词的释义有点别扭，再譬如 about 副词词性的前两条释义。个人而言更喜欢cod9. soed的释义

英英，各有千秋。英英，有时候让人深刻领会其含义，只可意会不可言传，但有时候又是隔靴搔痒，朦朦胧胧。英汉，有时候一目了然，但有时候可能不知所谓，尤其是有文化gap的时候。

predict在oed里的释义：

foretell:

ode喜欢用比较简单的词和简单的说法来解释罢了，没有问题。你举的例子，拿say ... will happen 写出来看看嘛。讨论英文释义就举英文例子，因为没人在说要开会时说 a meeting will happen，不存在同义替换的问题。
