The preface of this dictionary.
This dictionary is based on a wider experience with the usage of words than any one person can ever have in his own lifetime. A great body of information about words has been built up over many years, and lexicographers have made it their business to collect it and to organize it in dictionary form. We have endeavored to bring you authoritative data on every word you are likely to use in school, office, or home and in your daily contacts with people.
A great quantity of matter has been compiled in this work in very moderate compass, and the wide scope of this volume should meet the needs of the most exacting dictionary user. It is recognized that a dictionary suited to the popular demand for such a work should possess the three important qualities of accuracy，completeness, and convenience. This work carries an outstanding background of authority and scholarship and is a source to which you may turn with complete confidence for an understanding of the meaning, pronunciation, spelling, and proper use of the words with which you are unfamiliar.
In selecting the words for inclusion in this dictionary, the net has been cast fairly widely. The greatest importance is naturally attached to words in literary and colloquial use at the present day. At the same time, a large number of purely technical and scientific words and terms have been included since many of these necessarily play a considerable part in the lives of important sections of the community. Meanings and shades of meaning are carefully distinguished and explained, not with synonyms or confusing technical terms, but in clearly worded, simplified form, illustrated by quotations or brief phrases whenever necessary for lucidity.
The compilers of this dictionary have made it possible for the reader to find instantly the word or information he seeks, including at the same time such details as the spelling and pronunciation, as well as the origin of words so that he can appreciate how far reaching are the sources of our language. For easy reference, main entries are displayed in large, extra bold type the full width of the column, with definitions and other text matter slightly indented.
In order to carry out the principle of conciseness, the method of grouping related words in a single paragraph has been adopted. Particularly, primary words followed by a number of derivatives are thus grouped, and compounds are listed under the word that forms their first element.
We have included the name of WEBSTER, the great American lexicographer, in the title of this dictionary in recognition of his important contribution to the principles of lexicography.
