原句是在New Yorker上的一篇文章, 中文意思能理解，但是没有查到这里was（be）的用法是什么。
大家可以麻烦帮我看下吗？谢谢

摘自伍尔夫的 Phyllis and Rosamond。这段话中的show 是不是应该为showed 或者 shows (鉴于主语为 the partial light）？

前有do,后省to.

个人理解，这是but作为介词（常组成little but...，nothing but...等词组），后面跟不带to的不定式（bare infinitive）作宾语的用法（used with an infinitive as the object）。也就是说，show是but的宾语，而不是has的宾语，所以不用过去分词。
用例比如：
ODE里but（prep.）条： too shock to do anything else but [stare] ...
Webster's New World College Dictionary, but条例句: we cannot choose but (to) stay
