一看见 epic 这个词，英汉词典就说「史诗」。当形容词使的时候呢？机器翻译就说「史诗般的」「史诗级」，什么史诗级失败啦，史诗级威胁啦，频频亮相外媒汉译，仿佛读者没去看过《伊利亚特》，就不配明白这外文的意思。

其实 epic 某些语境下，可以译作「可歌可泣」，原因如下：

新牛津：

1 Relating to or characteristic of an epic or epics.
1.1 Heroic or grand in scale or character.
1.2 Particularly impressive or remarkable.

某些时候，epic 的内涵跟「可歌可泣」是对得上的。汉语成语源流大辞典：

「可歌可泣」未必直接来自周易，但「歌」「泣」「涕」「诵」可以并列，问题不大，周易原句说的是战事，正好《伊利亚特》也不缺战争。

汉英词通：

三本词典给的都是「战争」语境下的译文，是传统的做法。我把「epic fail」也用「可歌可泣」来翻呢，则有点活用的意思。

从字源来讲，“可歌”没问题。“可泣”就比较难讲了。

影视剧口语中的epic，其实就是超棒的之类的。如果口语中译成史诗级的，就很出戏了。

还可以补充，史诗本身就是：
“主要指以历史为题材的长篇叙事诗。多用韵文写成，也有散韵相间体。”
史诗和吟唱本身是有关联的。

畢竟有些故事是編出來的，跟事實無關
