There seems to be a latent curse on money, says 19th century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer; when it gets activated, shadows loom large. The time a masterful writer makes up his mind to compose for money, his words reach the point of no return from losing their ever-enlightening magic and ever-radiating charm; a talented soccer player whose head money has turned will soon be eclipsed by those still playing for that dream and passion cultivated since boyhood; when a popular musician begins singing sorely for money, gimcrack songs will be churned out that do nothing but disappoint his fans.
French painter Jacques-Louis David didn't produce art for money; the idea of The Intervention of the Sabine Women was conceived when he was in prison due to political persecution, and the realization of it took him nearly four years. From the canvas on which a white-robed Hersilia placed herself between her father to the left and husband to the right, both poised to attack, and the other Sabine women protected their babies, viewers could see a vivid picture of David sitting before his easel, breath calm, eyes wistful as his brush moved and immortalized this legendary scene in the most deliberate manner. That's true art of a true artist; that's why this glorious painting with a reconciliatory theme is still relevant over two centuries later today, in a world where sophisticated modern tribes having been launching at each other long-range belligerent rhetoric, blindly justifying life-destroying war. |
