Many cultures still place a high value on a woman retaining her virginity until marriage. In recent years, that's led to a boom in a type of cosmetic surgery that attempts to repair or re-create the hymen, the thin piece of skin that partially covers the entrance of the vagina. Now the UK government has announced plans to criminalise that procedure, described as an honour crime by campaigners, along with virginity testing. Here's our correspondent, Raghi Sandue.
In some communities, women and girls are under pressure to remain a virgin until marriage, with the expectation they should bleed after having sex for the first time. It's led to some seeking out ways to repair their hymen ( ____ hymens?) in a cosmetic procedure called hymenoplasty.
本帖隐藏的内容It's also known as virginity repair surgery. However, the World Health Organisation says the hymen isn't a reliable indication of whether someone has had sex. It can tear for all sorts of reasons, such as playing sports, or using tampons. Under the government's plans, anybody carrying out the surgery or taking someone abroad to do it could face a fine or a prison sentence of up to 5 years. But there are concerns from some that banning the procedure could force it underground. They say it should be regulated instead. The government says it's committed to safeguarding women and girls, and will work with communities to tackle the taboos and damaging preconceptions about virginity.
